ANIMALs

Heathlands and dry grasslands are home to a variety of animal species.

Some of them find optimal conditions in these habitats for winter hibernation (e.g., Sympecma paedisca, a rare dragonfly), or the host plants on which to lay their eggs, with the larvae feeding on the plants later on (as in the case of the caterpillars of Coenonympha oedippus, a butterfly also known by its common name, the "Heath Fritillary").

In habitat 2330, the "Ladybird Spider" (Eresus kollari) has also been observed—a small species with remarkably striking colors.

These environments are also home to numerous pollinating insects. By preserving arid habitats, we contribute to the protection of these vital creatures, which, through pollination, in turn help sustain the habitats themselves.

Below are profiles of three animal species, available for download as PDFs on the >>>download page of the website.
